Fast forward—

The world as only Olivia can see it is an ocean of yellow paint. There is no difference between any two specks of it but all the same she has somehow learned to differentiate, say, between the yellow that made the outline of a person, and the yellow on top of that. There was yellow inside each person, and a few months ago she became able to distinguish between the yellow that was their organs and another yellow that was in and around those things. In that way, it’s like an amorphous onion, with a multitude of layers. Continue reading

Fast forward—

The car rolls to a gentle stop, halting two houses away and on the opposite site of the street from the place she’s come to visit. The neighborhood looks just like she remembers, with tall trees hanging overhead, providing more shade than she’s seen in any other suburb, as though it were brick and asphalt here among a grove, and not trees and grass among a city subdivision. Fast forward—

It takes a couple of tries to actually hit the remote beside his bed and turn the lights on. At least he doesn’t have to deal with a lamp anymore—he knocked it over on his second night, in his attempt to work the twist-knob while his hands were shaking. Continue reading

Rewind—

“So,” Blank starts as they pull away from Austin’s house. He lets the word just hang there, solitary, maybe to let Hannah mull over it, maybe to invite Rucker’s thoughts before offering his own. Rucker, though, has to all appearances blocked out the rest of the world. Stretched out with her back against the door, behind Hannah’s seat, and one leg across the seat, her attention looks to have been quickly diverted into her tablet. Whatever it is that she’s working on or trying to figure out, Blank will no doubt hear about it later, but for now, it seems, it is left to Hannah to engage him in conversation. Continue reading

Agent Rucker looks…patient; Blank, respectful. They make eye contact for just a couple of seconds, then return their collective gaze to Hannah. Not for the first time, Austin feels like there’s something that he’s missing–between the agents, between them and Hannah–but he doesn’t have enough information to be sure.

Blank leans forward and steeples his fingers together. “What are you looking for?” he asks. Continue reading

Rewind—

Austin has dealt with some serious fires and seen gruesome burns, but it still unnerves him when Dead Zone’s eyes roll back and he slumps in his seat. For a moment everyone is looking awkwardly at each other, maybe wondering, like Austin is, whether they ought to check Dead Zone’s pulse or something. Before there’s any sort of silent consensus, though, his eyes are open as wide as they can go. He stares at Hannah for a moment, then pointedly turns away. Continue reading

Everyone gets settled around the kitchen table in relatively short order. The first thing that Rucker wants to know, of course, is who the other kid is. It’s a bit of good and bad news both: they hit the jackpot, two superpowered kids at once, but if some teenage boy, no matter how determined, could figure things out then who knows who else might be watching? Hannah knows that they can’t just leave, though. It’s going to go down a lot more easily with the volunteer fireman (fireboy?) than it went with her, but The Pitch still has to be given and the other kid is an unknown factor. Continue reading
