Meanwhile—

Reggie returns, slowly, to the waking world with a dull but insistent throbbing pain in his head. His vision is blurry, but he can see that there’s someone in front of him, doing…something. There’s a sort of splashing sound there, too. A moment later, he realizes that he’s on the ground–in the kitchen, this is tile that he’s on. His vision clears up a little, and the scene resolves into the figure of a woman in a white suit, idly pouring milk on the floor. He can’t see very well from this position, but there are a few glasses on the counter that are filled, to varying levels, with more milk, and there’s an empty jug on the floor. Continue reading

Fast forward—

When all is said and done, Olukayode is glad to be leaving. It’s important to keep everyone happy with each other, especially the bank manager, but for all that these meetings are necessary Olukayode finds himself drawn to his wristwatch every time. If he didn’t depend on them to keep the city running and himself out of prison, it would be a much easier life. Continue reading

Fast forward—

Bert is on his second apple by the time that Mary steps outside to talk with him. They’re mostly rosy pink, sort of like peaches, but with some light green parts that are close to the coloring of yellow delicious apples. The grocery store called them a Cripps Pink, and Google further informed him that they originated in Australia. Louisiana’s good for them, apparently. Continue reading

Rewind—

When Austin returns to the kitchen, the first order of business is to find out, since Simon is staying for more than a few minutes, if there are any dinner requests.

“Your parents aren’t going to be home for a while, are they?” Simon asks.

“Dad’ll be around in…” Austin checks the clock. “In an hour or so maybe. Mom could be home from the office then or later, if there’s still work to be done. I mean, I’d wait for Dad and my sister to get home, at least, but you probably haven’t eaten in an actual house for a few days.” Continue reading

Fast forward—

Five minutes after the clock strikes nine, there is a knock at the door.

“Come in,” Vasily says. “Hello, Mister Vinogradov. I am so glad to see you. Wo xiang ni zhiyi,” he says, meaning “I greet you.” The pronunciation of it is mangled, without a doubt, and Vasily wouldn’t rule out the possibility that an actual Chinese speaker wouldn’t have a clue what he’s saying. Most Russians are monoglots, though, and even if Lev Vinogradov knew enough to realize that Vasily’s lack of proficiency, it surely wouldn’t be a problem. People who pay for paranormal services are, Vasily is a little ashamed to admit, hardly the discriminating type, and a little bit of exotic mumbo-jumbo is spice on the package that they have come to him for. Fast forward—

Prime Minister Singh doesn’t want to weaponize her. Her father, especially and understandably, does not want to weaponize her. Ananya can follow the chain of logic in each case, and truth be told she doesn’t exactly want to weaponize herself either, but it happens to be the case that she can be weaponized, and she thinks that it is incumbent upon her to figure out how it could be done, if it turns out that she has to be made into a weapon. Rewind—

“So,” Blank starts as they pull away from Austin’s house. He lets the word just hang there, solitary, maybe to let Hannah mull over it, maybe to invite Rucker’s thoughts before offering his own. Rucker, though, has to all appearances blocked out the rest of the world. Stretched out with her back against the door, behind Hannah’s seat, and one leg across the seat, her attention looks to have been quickly diverted into her tablet. Whatever it is that she’s working on or trying to figure out, Blank will no doubt hear about it later, but for now, it seems, it is left to Hannah to engage him in conversation. Continue reading
